Little did we know that when each of our boys was born, their perfect hearing would fade away before they were done with elementary school. Eventually, we realized that hearing aids could no longer be enough.
My husband and I spent hours learning about the different CI choices. We wanted a manufacturer that our audiologist was very knowledgeable about, and AB fit that bill. We were impressed with how much room there is to upgrade the AB processor without needing to touch the internal implant. We wanted a company that cared about the people it sold to. AB had, and continues to have amazing technology, and we felt AB had a better product roadmap with demonstrable achievements to back it up. AB has been financially sound, which is critical, as we needed to know that the manufacturer would exist and continue to evolve to support our boys throughout their lives.
Throughout the process, AB was very good in engaging with us. After we became an AB household, we also learned that AB has excellent communication regarding product/technology and customer support. We recently spent an entire morning at the AB offices/manufacturing facility in Valencia meeting with staff from all parts of the company. We were blown away by the welcome and how much we learned!
Looking back, the impacts can be seen in many aspects of our lives. In school, they continued to be mainstreamed and both graduated high school with high grades. The boys also love the more recent upgrades to Bluetooth connectivity which opened up music, movies, and more for them. The one thing that never ceases to amaze me is that if you do not see the equipment behind my boys’ ears, you would have no idea that either is profoundly deaf.
