Hearing directly from people who are living with cochlear implants can make a difference to other users or candidates considering getting a cochlear implant. We’re sharing a short moment from an AB Mentor story—offering a real-life perspective and personal insight from someone who understands the journey first-hand.
🔎 Deanna's Story: “I lost my hearing in my left ear after a car accident. It was sudden, yet I didn't fully realize it or admit it until a month or two after the accident.
My first cochlear implant was a game changer! I could have a conversation with my daughter and husband at the dinner table, I could hear most conversations one-on-one and the TV. Also, my tinnitus reduced greatly. I received my second cochlear implant four years later—it is amazing! I hear so many sounds I haven't heard in years. Music is wonderful, conversations are so much more relaxing now because I'm no longer struggling, I can hear better in restaurants, and I don't have tinnitus anymore.
My WOW moment with my cochlear implants is how quickly I adapted, especially to the second one. I understood words immediately, and with exercises and practice, I was able to hear very well within a month. I was amazed at a jazz orchestra concert when I heard the piano player. I was ecstatic when I heard my daughter talking in the back seat of the car, and I'm overwhelmingly grateful that my tinnitus has greatly lessened or is non-existent.”
